Tuesday Musical Improv 1 – Term 2 2024

NOTE: This class is only open to students who have completed ITS Level 3 or above, or who have more than 1 year of improv experience.

Want to jazz up your improv?

Musical Improv: Fundamentals is about introducing the concept of musical improv into your already established improv skillset. We’ll explore genre styles, ways of fluidly creating rhymes, lyrics and melodies to make improvised singing come out naturally. Learn how to use emotional choices within different song structures and formats – and don’t worry if you’re not an amazing singer. This is about COMMITMENT, not musicality!

Targeted at students who already have some improv experience, this course will combine music theory along with practical exercises centring around harmony and song structure. Developed and taught by Tom Cardy and Bridie Connell, if you’re looking to build your musical literacy and confidence with characters, this is the course for you!

Bridie Connell is an award-winning writer and performer. Recent acting credits include indie feature Ellie and Abbie (and Ellie’s Dead Aunt), as well as television appearances on We Interrupt This Broadcast, Tonightly with Tom Ballard, Whose Line Is It Anyway Australia, True Story with Hamish and Andy and The Wild Adventures of Blinky Bill. She is a former national improv champion of Australia, and a world Theatresports finalist. She is one half of award-winning improv duo MotherFather with Tom Walker, and is a two-time state Theatresports champion. Bridie has taught improv all across Australia, New Zealand, the UK and UAE. She won the 2018 ARIA for Best Comedy Release for her song “Sex Pest”.

Tom Cardy is a multi-instrumental composer who’s knowledge of both improv comedy and musical theory has seen him accompany countless live performances, such as the Cranston Cup, Celebrity Theatresports and The Bear Pack. He has also composed for SBS’ The Feed, comedians Freudian Nip, the Sydney University Revue and the award winning musical Inner West Side Story. He currently teaches at ITS, writes and tours around Australia with his band, The Lulu Raes, and is the house musician for the improv/dungeons and dragons podcast Dragon Friends.

This class runs for eight weeks: eight classes followed by a grad show/showcase on the weekend of the eighth week.

Classes meet once a week for 2.5 hours. The course size is capped at 12 students.

Registration is $520 / $500 concession. Price includes a 7.8% non-refundable booking fee.
