What You Need Now with Rick Andrews

As improvisers, we’re constantly trying to grow and stretch our play. This workshop is gonna challenge you to take things to the next level. We’ll focus on tight, two person scenework with lots of side coaching and individual feedback. We’ll find ways to stop playing the same kinds of scenes over and over again and find new, rich ways to attack our scenes. We’ll identify our “improv parachutes” that are preventing us from the best work possible, and leave with actionable steps to keep improving.

Rick Andrews is a teacher and performer at The Magnet Theater, and has been studying, performing, and teaching improvisation since 1999. He began improvising with Improv Boston, and continued with a stint in Saint Louis, MO, and has been with Magnet since 2009, where he performs in Kornfeld and Andrews as well as The Armando Diaz Experience. He teaches at Magnet, at Columbia University in the MFA acting program, and at festivals and companies across the globe.

Formats & Styles: One-Act Play with Anna Renzenbrink

Over five classes and three shows, dive into the world of the one-act play. We’ll follow characters from scene to scene, building relationships, world, and stakes, and find satisfying resolutions to narrative arcs.

Anna Renzenbrink is an improvisation teacher and performer with 20 years of experience contributing to her well regarded and very practical, playful and supportive teaching style.

NARRATIVE SCENEWORK WITH JIM FISHWICK

What comes next? Join Jim Fishwick for an an 8-week Narrative Improv course exploring how to build story platforms, find a protagonist, be changed, raise the stakes, and tie things together at the end.

This class is eight weeks long and runs on Thursdays from 13 Aug – 1 Oct in Term 4. Class meets once a week for 2.5 hours, with an optional performance on Fri 1 Oct.

Really Really Active Listening with Rick Andrews

Almost every strong choice on stage can be traced back to listening — listening to your partner, and listening to the choices you’ve made in the scene. Great improvisers take every small moment, look, gesture, word choice, tone, pause, movement and use it to intuit even more of their scene partner’s headspace. Not just what could be true, but rather: what do I think my partner thinks is true? The more we hear in every moment, the more powerful our scenework gets.
