Chopping Carrots with Carlo Ritchie

Scene work begins with the physical space, the more clearly defined the space, the broader defined the characters, the bigger the emotions, the more intense the relationships. In this 3 hour workshop, improvisers hone the use of simple, repetitive tasks to build their scenes, pulling actors away from words and redirecting them towards action.
Carlo Ritchie is a founding director and former Artistic Director of Improv Theatre Sydney, one half of acclaimed improv duo “The Bear Pack” and ensemble member for “Thank God You’re Here.”

Acting For Improvisers with Kat Hoyos

In improv, have you ever been told, ‘You should take an acting class’?” Cool. This is that class. Over 8 weeks, we’ll steal the best bits of acting training and plug them straight into your improv. Expect voice, accents, and full-body character work, plus Laban, stagecraft, and script breakdown (yes, scripts – don’t panic). You’ll build characters that actually live and breathe, not just pop in for a joke. We’ll rehearse, get directed, and then throw it all back into improv where it belongs. Less “trying to be funny,” more being watchable. Stronger choices, grounded scenes, better improv.
8-week course | Classes 6:30-9pm Thur 11 Jun–30 Jul
Stronger Scenes = Stronger Songs w/ Jaron Why
Strengthen your improv to pump up your songprov with Big Hoo-Haa!’s former musical director Jaron Why!
This workshop focuses on creating solid scenework that will become the jet fuel for your showstopping numbers. To improvise a song freely with that musical theatre confidence, you need the preceding scene to have a stable platform, character specificity, and a bit of heart.
Jaron’s journey with music began over 20 years ago, learning the piano and musical theory from a young age. In 2014, when he joined the Big Hoo-Haa! as the Director of Music, Jaron combined his love of improvised comedy and music, taking songprov to new heights. Since then, he has performed and taught all over Australia with groups such as Impromptunes, Murder Village, Cabaret Time Machine and The Ad-Libertines.
