About our Schools Programs

READY TO START MAKING STUFF UP?

Come and have some playful, silly fun at Improv Theatre Sydney!

All of our classes and workshops are designed to help students get confident with skills explored in the classroom as part of the NSW Drama syllabus for stages 3-5 and HSC. See how our workshops link to the syllabus here. Not to mention you’ll connect with like-minded students and have a bunch of fun!

Are you a teacher keen to bring improv to your school?

Our teachers regularly work in and with schools to support drama teachers in finding innovative ways to approaching devising projects, creating characters, analysing texts, and more.

WHY IMPROV THEATRE SYDNEY

Improv is an inclusive, collaborative and participatory art form, made better by diversity in the people on stage and in the audience. At ITS, we work hard to provide a safe space where every student can be creatively supported, and every school can participate equally. We tailor our workshops to suit different school contexts, and a range of abilities in the classroom. We are also committed to keeping our schools programs financially accessible, and we work with schools to tailor workshop costs to suit school and family budgets. Our objective is to have far-reaching inclusion across all parts of the company, including a diversity of ethnicities, orientations, gender identities, ages and abilities. You can read more about our inclusion mission and ITS Bill of Rights

We regularly consult our Teacher Advisory Group to ensure our curriculum and workshop offerings are aligned with the needs and interests of teachers and students, particularly in the Greater Sydney region. Our workshop curricula are designed in consultation with current teachers, making clear links to the NSW Drama Syllabus. Read in more detail below how our workshops link to Making, Performing and Appreciating for Stages 2-6 here.

TESTIMONIALS

Hey! I am first heading line feel free to change me

What I enjoyed most was the atmosphere. It really felt like I was able to involve myself without that fear of being weird or cringey, which I think is usually present in high school drama. It was very much a free space. It was an excellent way to get me excited about drama again and get me excited about my future as a year 12 drama student.

– Bonnie, Year 11 student

Hey! I am first heading line feel free to change me

My students were totally engaged during the long-form show and workshop that followed. Kate and Maddie were exceptional tutors who made such meaningful links to the Drama syllabus. I can’t recommend it enough.

– Stephanie Merriman, Drama teacher

Hey! I am first heading line feel free to change me

It was helpful to watch a show and then do a workshop because it helped me to understand the concepts and recognise some of the skills we are learning. I felt very confident and comfortable in the space, and it was so enjoyable.

– Aiden, Year 11 student

Classes at Improv Theatre Sydney have been an amazing experience filled with both spectacular teachers and students. The loving community is unlike anything I could have imagined and classes (and the great shows) are always the best part of my week! Taking the jump to sign up was the hardest thing to do, everything after has been pure enjoyment!
