Susan Williams: Galactapedia
THE WORKSHOP
5…4…..3…2…1 Blastoff into the world of radio drama!
Can’t afford a realistic spaceship for your next improv show? Grab a mechanical eggbeater, a microphone, and some description skills and get ready to cruise the cosmos! Galactapedia teaches the basics of long-form radio drama, while having fun in a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (the radioplays) inspired genre.
- Learn to create and interact with foley (sound effects).
- Seamlessly sneak visual descriptions into your dialogue (“You look very upset with me right now. HEY, put that space blaster down! AAAAAAAGH!!!!”).
- Get comfortable with sci-fi (“Pass me that ratchet-sproggle space commander”),
- Create some useful space-faring characters
- Have a go at creating a short version of the Galactapedia format for your classmates!
This workshop has a showcase show attached to it in the festival’s main theatre. Participants who take this workshop may be cast in the show, but there is no guarantee – the casting is at the discretion of the teacher.
THE TEACHER
Susan (they/them) is an improvisor, actor, comedian, improv teacher, theatre maker, playwright, poet, disability advocate, and sci-fi nerd from Te Whanganui-A-Tara (Wellington), Aotearoa (New Zealand). They are pākehā (NZ European), queer, nonbinary, fat, functionally blind, chronically and mentally ill, ADHD, and Autistic.
Susan is apparently bouncy, fun, and kind. They own more than one sonic screwdriver, regularly survive wearing a red shirt, and, to their shame, rarely know where their towel is.
Susan has taught at NZIF (NZ Improv Festival), and Disabled Artists Festival of Theatre. Susan’s solo-ish scripted show Illegally Blind had two NZ seasons including being nominated for four Wellington Theatre Awards. They are co-director of the annual Disabled Artists Festival of Theatre in Aotearoa, and an active performer and disability advocate in their local community.
Find them on Facebook.
Sunday 19th November, 10am – 1pm at Improv Theatre Sydney.
