No Great Expectations

Take a moment to think about your favourite novel. The characters you love, the stories that have inspired you, the evenings spent wrapped up in its world. Now imagine it being performed by a pack of idiots who have never read a word of it.

Award-nominated comedians Room for IMPROVment are bringing their acclaimed Fringe show back to Sydney in their never ending quest to ruin classic literature. Across four shows they will be forced to improvise stage adaptations of four classic novels, all of which will be chosen by social media poll and go unread by the performers. It will be up to the well-read narrator to guide this gaggle of goofs through the story, with the help of some “facts” provided by the audience.

Prepare to have your old favourites thrown into a new light. Did you know that Treasure Island and Love Island are the same island? Or that Pride and Prejudice takes place in 1950s Chicago? Anything goes when it comes to these adaptations. Classic Literature will never be the same.

No Great Expectations comes to you from Wollongong-based Room for IMPROVment, who have performed across Sydney and the Illawarra for the last seven years. They have staged shows at the Sydney Fringe Festival, Australian Improv Comedy Festival, Wollongong Spiegeltent, and the Wollongong Comedy Festival. This show was originally developed as part of Room for IMPROVment’s 24 Hour Improv Marathon, and was featured at the Emerging Artist Sharehouse for the 2023 Sydney Fringe Festival.
