Janette McBride: Kultura
THE WORKSHOP
Kultura is Tagalog for Culture. In this workshop, you won’t learn Tagalog (unless you want to), but you will be empowered to use your true cultural stories as inspiration for your characters and scenes. You will play on your own cultural stereotypes, and learn storytelling techniques to explore and celebrate cultural taboos, sayings, superstitions, and traditions. These will then inspire the creation of genuine and hilarious characters in a long-form narrative showcase.
Previous participants have been from all over the world. This workshop is open to anyone who has ever been asked, “Where are you from – no, where are you really from?”
This workshop has a showcase show attached to it in the festival’s main theatre. Participants who take this workshop may be cast in the show, but there is no guarantee – the casting is at the discretion of the teacher.
