Formats & Styles: Deconstruction Deep Dive with Clare Cavanagh

Climb up to the tallest diving board and belly-flop in as Clare Cavanagh takes you on a deep dive into improv’s most mind-bending format. Over five weeks we’ll deconstruct (SORRY) the Deconstruction, figure out each part’s purpose, play around with it a bit and then put it all back together for three performances.

If you wanna engage with structure, strengthen your skills around relationships and game, plus work on overall themes for an improv show, then this class is for you.

This class is eight weeks long and runs in Term 2, 2026. The first five weeks of the course are workshops and rehearsals to build the required skillsets and mindsets for the show. The last three weeks are performances of the Deconstruction, with notes and performance feedback from Clare.

About the teacher

Clare is one of Sydney’s most sought-after improvisers and teachers. Her improv has taken her all over, from NYC’s Del Close Marathon, to MICF and of course our own sweet baby Redfern theatre. She was improv director for Osher Günsberg’s satirical news show NTNNNNN, ran the House Team programme at ITS, and works across Australia’s screen industry. Currently, she performs as part of fan favourite CWA, and runs ITS The Sunday Reset. As a teacher, Clare loves nothing more than nerding out with her students to really deconstruct (sorry) what is going on in a moment, what makes an improviser tick, and, most of all, how to get the most fun out of a scene.

8-week course | Classes 6:30 – 9pm Thurday’s 9 Apr – 7 May 31 | Shows 7pm Sunday’s 17, 24 & 31 May (Call time 6.15pm with note post show ending 8pm) 

This course is aimed at improvisers who have taken level 6 (i.e. have some experience with a variety of formats). However, if you have completed level 5 (or equivalent Harold level at another theatre), please email Clare to discuss whether this class would be suitable for you.
