Character and Dialogue Intensive ONLINE
Some writers deliver a masterpiece that was inspired by a single moment, or a chance conversation they overheard. Others see a character and follow them. Sometimes, you do both. In this workshop, you’ll discuss the importance of authentic characters and how they are the ultimate storytellers in your work, whether you are writing for performance or text. The workshop will also delve into dialogue essentials.
This intensive will cover:
- Dialogue and character voices
- Other character essentials – status, behaviours, relationships and more
- Studies of memorable characters from film and television
- How to work with your characters
- Exercises to develop your characters
- Writing from character
This intensive class is suitable for any level of storyteller who is interested in better understanding the significance of developing and writing from character.

Amal Awad is a journalist, author, screenwriter and performer. She is the author of two novels, with a third due for publication in 2021, and has three non-fiction books published, with a fourth due out in February 2021.
She has contributed to such publications as Frankie, Meanjin, Going Down Swinging and ELLE, and for online portals Junkee, Daily Life, Sheilas, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Vine and Screen Australia.
Amal has presented workshops and appeared on panels around Australia, for writers’ festivals, as well as special events such as All About Women, and Women of Letters at the Antidote Festival. She was selected to participate in Screen Australia‘s Developing the Developer program in 2019.
This ITS online course runs for two weeks, and meets once a week online for 2.5 hours.
This course is capped at 10 people per class.
