Acting for Improvisers with Kat Hoyos
In improv, have you ever been told, ‘You should take an acting class’?” Cool. This is that class. Over 8 weeks, we’ll steal the best bits of acting training and plug them straight into your improv. Expect voice, accents, and full-body character work, plus Laban, stagecraft, and script breakdown (yes, scripts – don’t panic). You’ll build characters that actually live and breathe, not just pop in for a joke. We’ll rehearse, get directed, and then throw it all back into improv where it belongs. Less “trying to be funny,” more being watchable. Stronger choices, grounded scenes, better improv.
What to expect:This uses a different muscle than improv. You’ll need time outside class to rehearse, learn lines, and prep (yes, homework). It asks for vulnerability too: emotional access, physical expression, and truthful behaviour. You won’t be thrown in the deep end, but you will be nudged past your comfort zone. Show up prepared, open, and ready to take risks. You’ll also need to be able to print scripts for class to score and write on during classes.
About the teacher
Silly, expressive, and unafraid to get a little ridiculous, Kat Hoyos lives for characters that come alive in big, bold, and goofy ways. A dancer, singer, actor, and improviser, she embraces physical play while keeping her characters grounded and full of heart. She’s toured nationally in musicals like Hairspray and Jersey Boys, and performed at the Auckland Cabaret Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, and Sydney Fringe. On screen, she’s part of the main cast of Channel 9’s Amazing Grace and Here Come the Habibs, can be spotted in Amazon’s Play Dirty, and in 2026 she’ll bring the scares in The Killings: Parrish Station on Stan. At ITS, expect playful characters and joyful mischief.
